Sex & The City: 'The Girls Are Back!'
Saying Farewell To The Fashionable Foursome
By: Mari Davis
DALLAS, Jun 22, 2003 /FW/ -- 'All good things come to an end,' says an old saying. So,
when I received my monthly email from HBO announcing tonight's premier of the final and sixth
season of 'Sex & The City' there was a little tug in my heart.
For five seasons, Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda were my Sunday night dates. Though
undoubtably I have missed several Sundays, I always get back to them on the reruns during
the week.
Even on its first year, it was a qualified hit. That was not surprising to me. After all,
I was a fan since the first episode.
What was surprising was that it became a fashion bellweather! Whatever the fashionable foursome
wears become an instant fad.
Yes, the girls look good in everything. But the real fashion guru in this case is costume designer
Patricia Field who is in-charge of the girls wardrobe.
Sarah, Kim, Cynthia and Kristen are all beautiful women in their own right. With their
characters, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Kristen, respectively, we welcomed them to our
living rooms.
They became our friends, our neighbors, though they are definitely not the typical
'girl next door.'
As announced by HBO last January, this season will be the last. But instead of the usual 13
episodes, it will be 20 to make up for last season which was cut short due to Sarah Jessica
Parker's pregnancy.
Twelve shows will air this summer, with the remaining eight slated for broadcast starting in
January 2004.
When the series ends, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis
will move on to the next project.
We will see them perform, and chances are, we will enjoy whatever roles they play.
But Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte will be gone. We will see them only on DVDs and
reruns.
But the fashionable foursome will stay in our conciousness, hopefully the same way that
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz do up to now with 'I Love Lucy.'
Because definitely, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte have become part of the
American pop culture.
