Movie Review: Tears of The Sun
By: Mari Davis

DALLAS, Feb 17, 2004/ FW/ --- It’s another Bruce Willis movie – tough guy with a soft heart, full of explosions and action. It’s also another ‘military’ movie, on a war that never was, and a mission that never was.

“Tears of The Sun” was torn out of newspaper headlines when Nigeria was undergoing ethnic cleansing. It tried to have a conscience, as it showed the horrifying deaths of Nigerians in the hands of their own militia.

But if you’re expecting something new in the military genre movie, you’ll be disappointed. The military hardware as in guns and equipment had been shown and done before.

That said, please allow me to say that I enjoyed the movie! It’s the middle of the fashion season and I needed to get away from looking at beautiful clothes on beautiful women. So, what do I choose to watch? A movie as far away from the fashion world as it could get.

But even while watching the movie, it was hard not to be a fashion critic. Because I was a military wife I knew military hardware and uniforms. The movie got it right, to the last Velcro pocket! The costume designer really did the research. And as ‘military’ movies go, there probably was a military consultant and the Pentagon Public Affairs was probably around too.

There were some military jargons that were wrong though, but that can easily be overlooked. Or I might have misheard because of all the explosions going on. And because there is not a Star Trek movie wherein I usually watch for bloopers, I did not ‘rewind’ so to speak to hear it again.

If want an adrenaline rush, without being an intellectual, this is the movie to watch on a lazy afternoon.
