LOS ANGELES, Apr 6, 2005/ FW/ --- In a very sad statement today, the Consulate General of Monaco announced the death of their monarch, His Serene Highness Prince Rainier III at the age of 81 on Wednesday, April 6, 2005.

Very dear to the heart of the American people, Prince Rainier’s fairytale marriage to actress Grace Kelly who became better known as Princess Grace put Monaco on the map of American consciousness since the 1950s.

And although after the tragic death of Princess Grace in a car accident in 1982, the royals of Monaco were seldom talked about in the American press, Prince Rainier’s popularity endured.

"He was a remarkable monarch, one of Europe's longest serving, whose charisma and vision -- along with the constant support and encouragement of His adored wife, the late Princess Grace -- smoothly guided Monaco into the 21st century to see it become a thriving international business, cultural and artistic center as well as one of the world's foremost luxury tourist destinations," said Monaco's Consul-General in New York, Hon. Maguy Maccario-Doyle.

There is no question about succession to the throne. Crowned Prince Albert who had been given sovereign duties as Regent since Mar 31, 2005 by the Council of the Crown will be named the new monarch.

The official funeral and mass for HSH Prince Rainier III is scheduled on April 15, 2005.

A Book of Condolence for the public has been opened in the lobby of the building housing the Consulate General of Monaco at 565 Fifth Avenue (entrance on the corner of East 46th Street).

It will be available for signing between the hours of 10:00am and 3:00pm from Wednesday, April 6 through Friday, April 15 (except Saturday and Sunday).

All messages will be passed on to members of Prince Rainier's family. Condolences may also be sent via e-mail to: Info@Monaco-Consulate.com
