LOS ANGELES, Jan 3, 2006/ FW/ --- What do the Pyramids of Egypt, Pharos of Alexandria, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Temple of Artemis, Statue of Zeus, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and The Colossus of Rhodes? They are the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, or simply called the Seven Wonders.
Originally compiled by the ancient Greeks as long ago as the 5th century BC, it was not until the 2nd century BC that it was firmed up by Greek historians.
It was during the Middle Ages that the list was finalized, and for centuries, these 7 engineering feats, wherein only the Pyramids of Egypt survived the ravages of time, have been the measure of humanity’s ability to change the surrounding landscape by building massive yet beautiful structures.
Today, during the dawn of the second millennium, in a world that is ‘aware’ the whole world will vote on the New Seven Wonders of The World.
Twenty-one landmarks had been chosen as the finalists for the last stage of the race to become one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The committee, which is made up of leading architectural experts announced the list last January 1, 2006.
Chaired by the former Director General of UNESCO, Prof. Dr. Federico Mayor from Spain, the New7Wonders Panel of Experts is made up of leading international architects: Zaha Hadid(United Kingdom), Tadao Ando(Japan), Cesar Pelli(USA), Yung Ho Chang(China), Harry Seidler(Australia) and Aziz Tayob(South Africa).
The New 7 Wonders of the World campaign was launched in 2000, and is already the world's first and largest global voting campaign.
