AUSTIN, TX, Jan 4, 2006/ MF/ --- ‘Don't Mess with Texas,’ one of the most effective, well-known public service litter prevention campaigns in history is turning 20 in 2006.
A yearlong celebration kicked off at the AT&T Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2. Ray Benson performed and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) debuted its new TV spot during halftime featuring famous Texans including: Lance Armstrong, Willie Nelson, Matthew McConaughey, Erikah Badu, Owen Wilson, Chuck Norris, Angie Harmon, Ray Benson, Julius Jones and Los Lonely Boys. The PSA began airing statewide on Jan. 2.
Don't Mess with Texas has enjoyed enormous success like a 33 percent reduction in roadside litter since 2001. But there's still a lot of work ahead-new research releasing Dec. 30 indicates one of every two Texans still admits to personally littering.
Did You Know?
Although litter dropped 33 percent half of Texans still litter.
Tobacco related products are still the most commonly found litter on Texas roadways, accounting for 33 percent of all litter found. Sixty-five percent of smokers litter their butts.
Fast food wrappers and cups are nearly as problematic.
Texans under 25 are the worst litterer; women are just as likely as men to litter.
According to the 2005 Visible Litter Study, 827 million pieces of litter accumulate on roadways annually. This is compared to 1.25 billion pieces in 2001.
