Viewers Tired of ‘Reality TV,’ New Survey Reveals
By: Heide Winkenwerder

Television Programming LOS ANGELES, Aug 28, 2006/ FW/ --- Bad news for Tyra Banks and Heidi Klum, hosts of ‘America’s Next Top Model’ and ‘Project Runway,’ they might be losing their audience as a new survey revealed that there is a high level of ‘reality fatigue’ in the American viewing audience.

The survey, which was commissioned by Circuit City Stores, Inc. and conducted on the Internet by Decision Analyst, Inc. of Arlington, Texas, also suggested that network programmers are out of step with the audience.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of survey respondents say ‘enough already, give me a break’ about reality shows.

That puts strike embattled ‘America’s Next Top Model’ (ANTM) in another pan of hot water, including the fledging series, ‘Janice Dickenson Modeling Agency.’

ANTM, which is already doing casting calls for its 8th cycle had made dreams of being a model reachable for many young girls. It also made the audience aware of what happens in fashion photo shoots; that it takes long hours preparing for it and long hours in front of the camera and not just the glitz and glamour-filled end product that they see.

Unfortunately, ‘reality fatigue’ is setting in among the TV audience and unless this trend is reversed, aspiring models will have to look elsewhere for their dream to come true.

Even the very popular ‘American Idol’ might be in danger, with 49% of the respondents having the same negative reaction to prime time talent contests,

So, what does the TV viewers want?

Fifty-one percent (51%) want to see more family-friendly programming in prime time; 37% of dads say they would like to see more football and sports in prime time, compared to 10% of women who shared that preference.

And good news to high definition TV, 45% of the respondents said that they want to see more shows broadcast in high definition.

In fact, the survey also revealed that high definition picture quality is the viewers’ top priority (48%) when buying a new TV. Twenty-one (21%) said that screen size is their most important consideration and 17% said that they would like to have a flat panel TV.
