Atsuro Tayama PARIS, Oct 2, 2006/ FW/ --- Atsuro Tayama’s ideal woman falls somewhere between the 1960's American Airlines stewardesses and the mod squad jet set, an interesting combination of those who are traveling and those making travel possible.

Womenswear dominated the show with menswear dispersed throughout. Menswear was very sleek and European; body conscious knit shirts and fitted slacks reminiscent of Lake Como and Milan were the overall look for men.

The most interesting menswear piece was the white jacket with corseting details on the back, a traditional women's undergarment re-worked into outerwear for a man, innovative and quirky. Of course, he reworked the classic tuxedo with some unusual button placement on the pants and alterations to the fall of the jacket.

Shorts were big for both men and women; Tayama did every style from short shorts to Capri’s. Short voluminous shorts are ever popular and he added his own interpretation with cleverly placed pleats and folds, making the shorts more skirt-like also his use of contrasting fabrics added a bit of fun and playfulness

The color palette changed from segment to segment first vintage red, white and blue, American Airlines original colors; later shots of gold were introduced. He also gave us the ever-present black and white for spring and finished with splashes of color in combinations of cream and violet, cream and green and cream and turquoise.

Not only did the designer play with colors but prints as well. The dominating theme was circles and stripes that later reworked themselves into an interesting graphic floral print incorporating tulips. He also made use of tulip cutouts as appliques on dresses and tops, injecting a very young and playful hirajuku girl tone into the collection.

The silhouettes were beautiful both body conscious and form flattering. There were a-lot of tunics and dresses worn as tunics over cropped pants or leggings. Staying true to this season’s obsession with volume: puffed sleeves, balloon skirts, and a-line skirts skimming the body and bursting at the knee were the connecting pieces in his collection.

The jewelry and accessories tied the circle motif in with earrings and belts constructed from a mass of circles in different color combinations and sizes. The jangle and junk of the jewelry was very mod squad and white eyeliner. Standout pieces were the large polka dot black and white dress with full skirt and red, white and blue circle/stripe jersey dress. They felt fun, elegant and sexy

Atsuro Tayama continues to create fresh looks each season catering to the same elegant and spirited woman separated only by era or decade and we all know age is nothing but a number.
