Blaak's True Colors

LONDON, Feb 26, 2002/ FWD/ --- Blaak is the name, but black was definitely not a color
seen much in the fall-winter collection by this London label.
Bright orange, flaming purple and surgeon's green were the primary hues in this jokey,
multi-layered collection staged in Porchester Hall, London Fashion Week's secondary venue
near hip Notting Hill.
It was hard to imagine anyone other than a catwalk model wearing outfits that tended to be
composed of pleated green skirts held up by cartridge belts, worn with pairs of string
T-shirts.
But at least the presentation let individual pieces stand out.
Knits like the cool little cardigans and cute lavender tank tops looked very commercial and
fun to wear.
Blaak also showed men's wear, and impressed with clever, accordion-like denim jackets,
pants pleated down the front, and bizarre jackets made of padded mover's blanket material.
At times the look was far too much, like the men's vests with double fronts.
But at least Blaak designers Aaron Sharif and Sachiko Okada injected plenty of energy into
their clothes, a welcome thing in a soporific London season.
