PARIS, Jul 1, 2002/ FW/ --- For the Fashion Editors who have recently bemoaned the
preponderance of skinny boys found on the runways of Paris, Jean Charles de Castelbajac
answered their prayers with a summer 2003 collection that brimmed with muscles, sweat and
testosterone.
The Boxing Club of Paris was the choice site of the show entitled "Keep Fighting", where
members of a sports club served as models for a fun collection of sparkly sportswear.
A relaxed Castelbjac, dressed in denim, mingled ringside with his guests, warmly greeting
Richard Buckley with the words, "So you've come to see my work!"
The collection itself consisted of shorts, often inlaid with fanciful brocade and sequins,
muscle shirts which bore their own message "Casius Way", "Hey yo Tommy", "Jo, Barney, Tony,
Rocky", plus a belt marked "Everwin".
The action took place in three rinks, as the boxers simulated a fight to the amusement of
the assembled press, and even worked up quite a sweat before the final gong sounded.
"Yes," Jean-Charles de Castelbajac told FW. "It is a very relaxed look, but it's also very
authentic."
Truer words could not be spoken, given that his approach certainly captures a street-smart
look, and effectively speaks to the way most real men dress.
Much of what is shown on the catwalks during Fashion Week is done to catch attention, without
the slightest intention of it ever being worn.
There was certainly a minimalist beauty to the work, a getting down to the roots with satiny
clothes that are easy to wear and plain relaxing.
