PARIS, Oct 12, 2003/ FW/ --- The invitation for the Spring / Summer 2004 show by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac featured rubber duckies floating in a pond. And if that was not enough to peak your interest, try this for size, literally. The invitation was 20 inches by 20 inches.
Entitled, “Poptimist,” as in “pop culture” and “optimist,” added together, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac poked fun at the world’s pop culture, including the fashion world.
One dress featured graphic drawings of shoes, and it said, “Made In Italy.” Another dress featured a man and a woman, and it said, “Made in Love.”
One of the most fun accessories are the chokers which are giant size bar codes, poking fun at the retail industry in particular, and advent of computer technology in general.
He even made fun of the California Governor recall election with one outfit featuring a photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger from the movie “True Lies” with the words, “Made In California.”
Or maybe, the dress was meant to poke fun at Hollywood. Nevertheless, it was perfect timing, with Arnold being proclaimed as the new governor of California this week.
It was a very youthful collection, meant for high school kids and college coeds. But it does not that if you’re over 30, you cannot wear it.
It’s about fun in the sun. Whether we’re young and old, we are entitled to enjoy summer!
