Roberto Cavalli: Arabian Outback
By Godfrey Deeny

Milan, June 26, 2001/FWD/ "Roberto Cavalli continues his journey," read the program notes for the
designer's men's collection Tuesday, and the designer lived up to his promise - in an allegorical romp
through continents, cultures and clothing styles.
Before images of Moorish musicians, African tribes and desert expanses projected on giant screens, Roberto
sent his heroic models down a rocky Wild West catwalk to frequent bursts of applause from the crowd, who
were packed into discotheque Rolling Stone.
Cavalli is certainly an inventive designer, whose skill is revamping classics rather than offering new
silhouettes. Thus, a traditional safari jacket looks refreshing in distressed python, and jeans are made
super-sexy in faded leopard prints. The result is a collection of great nightclubbing gear -- jeans
in Navajo prints, shirts plastered with old postcard prints and fossil shapes.
The Cavalli man is a "modern explorer" who mixes cult items and concepts, Roberto insists. He's a
rugged type who doesn't mind getting a little dusty on the trail.
And judging from this collection, entitled Arabian Outback, he has plenty of fun on the way.
