Paris, Oct 9, 2001/ FWD/ --- You’re on the back of the vespa with your lover. The wind is in your hair, and the sun is on your face,” read the models’ instruction backstage at Celine’s Spring 2002 show – a sweet, young love kind of collection entitled “Rustic Romance.”

To create the romantic resort look, makeup artist Dick Page used a Spanish lavender around the eyes, along with bronzer on the cheeks. “Michael [Kors] wanted the feel of a vacation to Positano - so very warm, tan looks,” explained Page, dabbing mauve lipstick on Maggie Rizer’s pout. “And I like the combination of cool tones on a warm face - it brightens things.”

As for hair, Orlando Pita, the master behind Gucci’s wild and windy locks, created soft waves for a beachy, wind-swept appeal.

This was the most youthful collection Kors has designed for the house of Celine since he acquired the position in 1998. Reminiscent of the ‘60s and ‘70s (the latter being the decade the intended wearer was probably born), durable suede, crochet and hand-tooled leather surfaced in earthy, furniture-covering shades of avocado, paprika, and lavender.

Shapes took on a very vintage feel as well. Shorter, ruffle-cuffed jersey tops and dresses dominated the runway, along with multi-striped canvas mini shorts, belted suede coats (looking as though they’d been pulled from the racks of Cheap Jacks), pop floral tube tops, and knee-length macramé skirts in the fabric of free-love - hemp cotton.

Kors, though, didn’t entirely dismiss his society doyennes. There were some elegant beaded lace pieces such as tops to wear with beaded linen trousers and skirts to pair with a cashmere pullover.

And since last spring’s cartridge-embellished accessories (which topped most wish lists), shoppers have kept a close eye on Celine bags and shoes – two areas that, come next spring, certainly won’t disappoint. To wear on the back of that vintage vespa with your new saffron daisy silk crepe skirt? A mahogony leather hand-tooled clutch that squishes when you grab it and matching kitten-heeled thong sandals.
