PARIS, Oct 9, 2002/ FWD/ --- Celia Philo, Phoebe Philo’s mother, summed up her
daughter’s third outing for Chloe this way: "I could see Phoebe wearing every single outfit.
It’s so her, it just looks so right."
Mini popstrel Kylie Minogue - decked out in Chloe jeans and a plunge front pink tee -
nodded in agreement before rushing off to congratulate the designer and whisper her
personal order.
That’s the thing about the 29-year-old Philo -- hers are clothes that you want to walk
straight off the runway and into your life.
Philo took us on a trip from a chi-chi Paris nightclub circa 1977, to sun drenched Morocco,
and onto a laid-back yacht that cruised the Med, stopping off at various hotspots on the way.
Voluminous black chiffon toga and tank dresses were studded with chunky gold pearls, and
accessorized with gold tie belts.
Chiffon tops were paired with rolled up shorts and worn with fierce over the knee boots.
Drapey ali-baba pants, smocks, high waisted shorts, to-the-knee trousers, heavily fringed
white leather jackets, tie-dye jeans, layered racer back tanks, paper bag waist sack skirts,
and lacy sundresses also made it into the mix.
The color palette was rather muted for a show that claimed to be all about a ‘Mediterranean
Summer’ – Philo stuck to black, white, and washed out mint, pink, lilac and gold.
Swimwear was very Bo Derek, al wrapped and tied around the body.
Handbags were desirable in chocolate leather ‘70s shapes with gold clasps.
The standout dress, modelled by girl of the season Natalia, was black short, empire
line and had a web of gold pailettes running across the decollete.
For what the show lacked in exuberance it made up in clothes that many women will want
in their summer wardrobe.
"It’s Chloe sexy," said Philo backstage, "which is not vulgar, not cheap but refined, and
hot and raunchy. This collection is all about finding great things to wear."
At this, Philo has again succeeded beautifully.
