Chompol Serimont: Color Me 1970s

New York, Feb 13, 2001 / FashionWindows --- It was a trip down memory lane at the Chompol Serimont show. Watching 1970s inspired clothes, updated and without the tackiness of the 1970s reminded of my growing up years when Saturday Night Fever was a hit and John Travolta was my hero.

Known for his wild use of colors and body hugging designs, Chompol Serimont presented one of the most colorful collection this season. Starting with the basic color pallette of beige and brown, it expanded to the colors of the rainbow and beyond.

Slouchy hipster pants held by suspenders, kangols and hats, plaid and paisley, the collection was a for the young and the young at heart. I could see teen-agers wearing the clothes, but if you are over 30, there are very few items that could fit in your wardrobe.

There was no coherence nor logical pattern that would build someone a wardrobe from this collection. Great onesies and twosies that you could add to your existing one, but there was no basic foundation to build on one.

But that is what the designer wanted you to think. It's wacky, it's hip, it's young!

There was great leather pieces and reference to biker chic with the leather gloves. You could even say there was an allusion to S&M. But it was so hip that S&M just did not fly in the context of the whole collection.

Bare midribs, assymetrical hemlines, and the use of two-tone leather dominated this Fall 2001 collection from Chompol Serimont. When I saw the tie-dyed pants, I was expecting to see bell bottom jeans, but thankfully, I was disappointed.

If you're hip and young and just want some addition to your wardrobe which are fun and colorful, then this is the place to be. Most memorable piece for me is the slouchy low pants held by suspenders.
