Costume National doesn’t make your average black wardrobe staples. Designer Ennio Capasa, who
took the label’s name from an antique book on French uniforms, has created a trademark of minimal,
tailored sportswear for the cool elite crowd.
For Spring/Summer 2002, slim pants were livened by sheer shirts, which were worn unbuttoned to the
navel with sleeves rolled up and collars high, and the look was completed by the requisite corset.
Sleek trenches with double-wrap belts were light and easy over slim trousers and round-toed heels.
With the fashion pack now so used to the ultra low-waisted, cheek-revealing pant cuts, it was a
surprise to see very high-waisted black jodhpur pants with side lace-up fastenings. A strictly
tailored white shirt with latticed side panels and a seriously structured gray bodice were some
of the best pieces.
The usual Costume National black and white was broken by steel gray, midnight blue and the
occasional brighter shades of fuchsia and yellow.
