PARIS, Mar 16, 2003/ FW/ --- It was a disappointing Fall 2003 collection from emerging
designer Dice Kayek who showed a very strong collection last season.
With the collection entitled 'Playground', the show opened with children reciting rhymes
on the soundtrack.
With the audience anticipating playful looks for fall, what they saw were 1960s inspired
dresses and feather-trimmed gowns and coats more suited for Las Vegas than the streets of
Paris.
The collection started strong with lots of black pieces that echoed school uniforms - double
breasted jackets, knee-length pleated skirts and generously cut pants.
But it went downhill from there.
From black, there was a sudden burst of color. The designer sent lemon yellow dresses and
acqua blouses.
Disaster reared its ugly head when a model walked in in a black catsuit with a low-waisted mini
skirt in yellow.
Then, Ohmayrha came in in a double-breasted yellow dress/jacket with huge black buttons that
made her look fat.
But that was not the most disappointing part. The 'feather' pieces were.
When the third and last set of the collection
were shown, all the models looked like they are the stars of a remake of the Hollywood
box office disaster 'Showgirls' which killed Elizabeth Berkeley's career.
The collection is not without merit though.
Dice Kayek's draping and attention detail remained impeccable. In fact, one of the black
evening dresses is worthy of an MTV video.
The off-the-shoulder black shirt paired with a black mini-skirt is something that downtown
girls will wear.
