Dior Homme by Hedi Slimane: Hedi Goes Rock & Roll
By Michelle Taylor
PARIS, Jan 26, 2004/ FW/ --- It’s time to leave the ultra modern exclusive nightclub and charm that lies in the shadows for the young boys of Hedi Slimane and take a walk in the sunshine.
After diverse seasons of total black looks, Slimane found variety among his design tools and gave a show full of unexpected ingredients in Paris on Monday night.
1970’s rockers with runners, ultra slim silhouettes, stringy hair and large sunglasses. There is little apparent eccentric luxury in this collection that is reminiscent of a young Rolling Stone, and yes Mick Jagger himself was present as secret VIP at the show.
Hipster pants are held up by belts that pull them tight to the body while jeans and denim seem worn and destined to become one of those treasured favourites found in charity stores (in this case there is however a slight variation in the price tag!).
The musts for the Dior Homme everyday rocker are simple; V neck sweaters and turtlenecks; a reworked bomber; slim long sleeve shirts often with tone on tone stripes achieved through fabric thickness and as already mentioned the runner, adidas inspired if possible.
He places elbow patches on jackets and uses pinstripes for a more sophisticated look, trenches are knee length and mini jackets have either zip closures or are double breasted.
His perfect little velvet jackets and longer black coats are all demonstrations of attention to sartorial detail.
Nights blend into days, where these street-wearing guys forget the rules and make new ones of their own.
Their wardrobe is their uniform, a statement of their lifestyle. If this is the case, then what do the group of lads in full length kilts have written on their code of ethics?
Probably to honour and obey great cuts and fine style.
The variety in look of this autumn winter 2004/05 menswear collection for Slimane is a pleasant surprise, and with the launch of the Galliano Homme range and the rumours that the two designers don’t exactly see eye to eye, Hedi Slimane proved his worth with a series of outfits from a rock decade that changed the face of fashion and way of being, a look that as demonstrated in both Milan and Paris is on its way back.
