PARIS, Feb 1, 2005/ FW/ --- Last night at the Atelier Berthier, iconic Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane fused heavy metal with men’s couture as he continued his approbation of rock & roll, this time with a romantic look at KISS, complete with drummers and original music provided by Razorlight.
With a 4-inch by 6-inch press notes greeting the guests, and only the sentence, “Everybody just looks the same” as the only thing written, turned out to be a tongue-in-cheek statement by the Paris-born designer, as he sent out a collection rich in innovation and looks.
Sticking to his razor-thin silhouette, Hedi Slimane sent models barely on their teens with gold and glitter eye make up sporting knitted sweaters, leather jackets and golden shoes on the runway.
The snug-fitting front zip jacket adorned with beads in different colors is definitely worth a rock star costume while on stage. Even the red and black striped blazer paired with printed shirt and styled with a Louis XVI huge bow of the same material and color would have given Paul Stanley a big smile on his face.
Knitted shawls that reached mid-calf were the accessories of choice for the low-waist pants held by leather belts, which by the way to the surprise of many did not have the Dior Homme logo.
And just when everyone thought that the show had ended since all the lights were turned off, 4 drummers high up on the air, on pedestals built from construction poles played original music.
Yet, the ending was more dramatic, with a model all in black wearing a dark cape, the white shawl the only thing visible in the dim light. And as the venue’s light slowly brightened, he was followed with all the models dressed identically from head to toe – a hat, black shirt and pants, a fitting explanation to the press notes.
When Hedi Slimane came out, the front row, including Bernard Arnault and his wife Helene were all smiles, knowing that the House of Dior have another winner on their hands.
