PARIS, July 5, 2005/ FW/ --- Hedi Slimane continues his rock & roll approbation this season with his Seattle-sound inspired collection, turning back the time when grunge was the craze and Nirvana was a hit.
Staying with his signature slim silhouette, Hedi Slimane sent skinny young boys with tousled long hair as if they just came from a head banging session with a band, wearing hip-hugging, low-rise stove pants matched with shrunken jackets over striped shirts, and dirty sneakers completing the ensemble.
Last season, the iconoclastic designer paid homage to Mick Jagger. For Spring 2005, Hedi Slimane crossed the Atlantic and the continental U.S., all the way to the Pacific Coast, ending up in Seattle where grunge was born and Nirvana was formed, with Kurt Cobain becoming its most famous member.
Maybe it’s a coincidence that this year is the 10th anniversary of his death, yet it is very hard to miss the references to the dead rocker’s style – windswept hair, tight pants, a shawl carelessly wrapped around his neck over thrift shop clothes.
Thank goodness that Hedi did not go that route. Instead, he dressed the ‘young Kurt Cobains’ on the runway with his fine cut suits, shirts and jackets.
The leather jackets favored by Cobain became close cut, the green BDUs, another favorite of the Seattle bands became more sartorial, and the ubiquitous sweatshirts, worn by underground rockers due to the usually cold and rainy Seattle weather became lighter for summer use.
For Hedi Slimane fans who are closet rock & rollers, they just found fashion nirvana with this Seattle-sound inspired collection.
