MILAN, Feb 24, 2006/ FW/ --- Building on what they started for menswear, Dean & Dan Caten was once again inspired by the British upper class for their Fall 2006 menswear collection, giving the lowly denim the attitude de rigueur while creating some sumptuous evening wear that can compete with the red carpet attires of the upcoming Oscar night.
As already mentioned before, the idea of creating a collection based on the British came when the twins found out that their mother was part English. And since the ‘terrible twins’ (as Dean & Dan described themselves in their press notes) were looking into the family tree, the show began with ‘A Tale To Tell,’ on how the design duo began their career, eventually making fun of how ‘they were saved by Jesus and won over by the wild west.’
So, to the British Isles everyone flew wearing low-rise tuxedo pants and white tuxedo shirts, the tuxedo jacket inspired by a parka lined with fur for opulence.
The denim jeans became riding jodhpurs, the cargo pants done in velvet; the tartan became a floor length skirt paired with a tuxedo-inspired knitted sweater and the riding jacket was constructed with microfiber, quilted and filled with down.
Again, from the press notes, ‘From raunchy to regal, from caps to top hats, from beer to champagne,’ Dean & Dan harmonically mixed opposites, coming up with a collection that captures the zeitgeist of the youth who are individualistic at heart and loves making their own fashion statements.
Still, the Princess blazers, the empire dresses and the ultra-low backless gowns are fit to wear when having an audience with Queen Elizabeth II.
The pantsuit sets and pencil skirts can actually pass for, dare I say, ‘office wear’! And, though this will be the first time it will be said about DSquared2, the trench coats, fur stoles and long traveling jackets are fit for the ladies who lunch!
So, although Dean & Dan Caten were just having fun, they managed to expand their market base, a testimony of their wide range as designers.
