MILAN, Mar 4, 2001/ --– It’s back to the future at Fendi, where Karl Lagerfeld delivered a
slick collection for Fall 2001, almost exclusively in white.
The show’s colors and mood recalled Courreges, while the retro-futurist theme was underlined by
bold, Star Trek-like white boots and intergalactic, purple wraparound shades.
This collection’s proportions, however, had little in common with the French futurist. Lagerfeld
cut his jackets and coats broad shouldered with high-collars. He mixed up the all-white mood with
silver bands, and even sent out an ecru mink bomber jacket with three one-inch-wide metal strips
showing at the back.
The good news is that Fendi furs are more dreamily sexy than ever. In a brief break from the
milky mood came four spectacularly slick gray astrakhan suits with a hussar jacket and to-the-knee
skirts.
Then Lagerfeld segued into a passage that blended Victorian and vamp in a series of sleeveless,
minidresses and hotpants with horizontal lace strips.
Lagerfeld’s favorite material for Fall 2001 is an all white leather with a paisley design stamped
onto it. He used it on boots, tunics, coats and some great new flat handbags.
Before the show, Patrizio Bertelli of Prada and Yves Carcelle of LVMH saluted each other
with considerable bonhomie. Seconds later, the show opened with the DJ playing Sly Stone’s
classic "It’s a Family Affair." Not anymore, Prada and LVMH joined forces last year to buy Fendi.
