Somberly Sexy Fendi

MILAN, Mar 3, 2002/ FWD/ --- There were two distinct halves to the Fendi collection presented
on a rainy Saturday here, and both of them were pretty great.
Fendi opened with a somberly sexy palette of chocolate and coffee, before morphing into a
silvery and beige second half, and hardly anything in this assured, modern and stylish
collection was redundant.
Working with the finest materials -- mink, gingery fox, lambskin and even chinchilla --
the designer duo of Karl Lagerfeld and Sylvia Fendi sent out a collection studded with
beautiful looks in a lean, elegant silhouette.
Opening with a stylish set of paneled suede corsets and long dresses, and finishing with
Jacquetta Wheeler flourishing an eight-foot-square fox stole, the show didn’t so much flaunt
luxury as shout it out.
In among the great outfits were some fantastic knee boots in crumpled and crinkled leather
and a pack of cool half-moon bags in carved leather with feathers and leather trims.
Set before a backdrop of speckled rose and backed up by a soundtrack of waves mixed with
mournful strings, the show had an agreeably polished air.
The goddess-like models had sleek slicked-back hair, the better to highlight the opulent mood.
But above all it was the patchwork, elongated coats in the finest furs, thrown casually onto
the girls, that caught the eye. This was luxe at the hautest level.
And rather sober, wasn’t it, Karl? -- FWD inquired of the master.
"That was the idea. It’s on top of your skin, not underneath it," smiled Lagerfeld, as he
clutched this critic’s shoulder.
