Fendi: Rich Rebelliousness

Milan, Oct 3, 2001/FWD/ --- More autumn-like than sun-shiny day, for Spring 2002, Fendi presented a dark,
moody collection comprised of rich fabrics like suede and leather in dusky espresso, cinnamon, and taupe colors.
With hair and makeup resembling maniacal birds of prey, the models aggressively forced their way down the
runway in a frenzy of looks: dark chiffon blouses in a flurry of pleats and ruffles, some with heavy leather
cuffs, other dripping or strapped with leather plant details, long mocha jersey dresses gathered at the hip by
a large disk, a brown suede fringed skirt which was more tribal than anything hippie, and light, draping dresses
with bat-like silhouettes.
Think well-swaddled road warrior, add a touch of tribal and a good dose of gothic, and you’re almost there.
Dissecting the Hitchcockian visceral attack, there were plenty of evocative but yet wearable looks. The suede
pants with leather detailing, granted a bit heavy for warm weather, were still fantastic for the rest of the year.
Long, romantic chiffon dresses fixed with a black daisy detail in front and a host of beautiful fluttery bohemian
blouses were other favorites.
And once again, Karl Lagerfeld did not disappoint in creating one of next season’s most wanted bags – a heavy,
burnished leather half-moon number with fringe and fern-print appliqués.
It’s a collection that won’t appeal to all, but its rich rebelliousness mood certainly can’t be ignored. And
as a nervously thin Lagerfeld came out to greet a crowd deafened by the unsettling pierce of the musical finale,
it was Allure’s Lucy Sykes who seemed to best put words to the general reaction: “My goodness me,” she breathlessly
exclaimed.
