Francis Hendy: True Colors

New York, Feb 9, 2001 / FashionWindows --- During the men's portion of New York Fashion Week, there
was a trend of "color." More and more men's designers are experimenting with using brighter
colors for men's clothes. Of course, they still design the obligatory black, gray and dark brown. With
the Fall 2001 Collections, we saw the color pallettes expanding to magenta, blue, purple and lavender, even
green and fuschia.
The clothes are still not colorful as the women's collections. It is still a positive outlook on men's
clothes with the expansion of the color pallette.
Known for being daring and innovative, Francis Hendy showed both trends in his Fall 2001 Collection.
Starting the show with a boy which could not be over 10 years old, the show was about color, luxury and
updated military look of the First World War. If anyone could make the Red Baron fashionable, it would
be Francis Hendy.
The show was a mixture of synthetic and natural fibers. Most impressive is the use of colors that ranged from
electric blue to light yellow. The designer also used fur as trim to jackets and showed that distressed leather
could look wonderful and could be worn as a formal suit.
Francis Hendy dressed the other half of the world's population for almost all occasions - the office, the
theater and dinner, skiing in Aspen, and urban streets. There were even pieces that would look good on
a MTV video.
The more interesting pieces are the World War I uniforms which were updated for the Millennium man. From
the foot soldier of the French berets to the aviators, it was a sight to see. Where would one wear it, I
don't know. The clothes caught my eye because of my military background. If Patton was alive, he might
have something to say about it. But, it was not even his war, so, maybe, he would not say anything.
One noticeable thing - men's haircuts are short, and bald is sexy. I think Michael Jordan and Sean Connery
had started a trend about baldness as a sign of masculinity, not a sign of weakness. And if you are Star Trek
fan, you would say Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard set the stage for it.
Goaties for facial hair and sunglasses are a recommended for grooming and as an accessory respectively.
The Fall 2001 Collection is definitely a signature Francis Hendy.
