PARIS, Feb 2, 2005/ FW/ --- If you’ve ever wondered what European hip-hop looks like, all you have to do is go see any of Gaspard Yurkievich’s recent work in menswear. The young man is quickly making a name for himself in the domain and with good reason.
His Fall 2005/Winter 2006 collection dedicated to hip-hop amour is a mear exercise in hip-hop sportswear with a touch of bling-bling for the young designer.
His sweatsuit in jersey have gold detailing which gives them a bit of appropriateness for dancing at a trendy rap and R&B club. His T-shirts have gold sequins intricately placed so to capture one’s attention.
Yurkievich pants throughout the collection is a play on the young man’s obsession with nice arses. In jersey or stretch cotton and clinging closely to every aspect of the male silhouette, the pants here will give curves to even the most unflattering backsides.
The jersey tights also come in an explosion of darkened colors. The parka and stretch pants in silver-gold tone grabs one attention.
Overall, the designer presented a collection that is easy to wear and looks like what the youth of Europe are looking to buy. This collection identifies with their rebel spirit looking to feel good about themselves by expressing themselves through street dancing.
Any one familiar with Yurkievich’s presentations is certainly familiar with the way his fetich dancers writh and girate around the stage during the shows. This one had its trademark homo-erotic performances, but lacked the entertainment value of the last two shows, which kept tongues wagging for months.
Should Gaspard decide to resurrect a long forgotten dance called the “prep” at any of his future shows, he will forever enter the ranks of the European hip-hop master.
