Gaspard Yurkievich: Porn as Art?

PARIS, Jun 30, 2003/ FW/ --- Perhaps I'm just strange, but it would seem that if you
wanted to watch porn, there is any number of ways to do it, none involving a "fashion" show.
That was, however, not the reasoning of Gaspard Yurkievich, who commissioned Edouard Levé
to stage his summer collection as a group sex porno flick.
Using four models that simulated every position possibly known to man, and involved every
male on male act illegal until last Thursday in certain parts of the US, the production
passed for art.
The set was a gray sofa, a beige rug, spotlights and silence.
The effect was not so much titillating as just plain vulgar.
Editor Richard Buckley, who was at the Yurkievich show with bells on, took heat two years
ago for approving a layout in Vogues Hommes featuring Bel Ami gay porn stars.
A groundswell of criticism questioned what the display had to do with fashion.
At today's event, there were possibly 10 different pieces of clothing shown, if you count
the over layering, theoretically in violation of the 40 piece minimum required by the French
Federation of Couture.
Of those pieces, a pair of cargo pants, a sleeveless mesh T, and shirts plastered with
"Hip Hop" and "Hurray" were seemingly not meant to be the center of attention.
Creating sensuality, an erotic life beyond clothing is an art form.
Using eroticism to clothe porn makes minutes seem like hours.
