Hermès: The Class of the Field

Paris, Jan. 26, 2001/FWD/ --- Is there a classier men’s collection out there than Hermès? Hard to know which.
Admittedly, the house’s menswear designer Veronique Nichanian has the considerable advantage of using incredibly
fine fabrics and leathers. But her cut, sense of color and use of subtle detailing have made Hermès a by-word for
modern class in men’s fashion.
This season the collection was presented in the foyer of UNESCO’s headquarters, whose undressed concrete walls
contrasted neatly with the noble materials Hermès always uses. Nichanian’s strongest ideas were rope cashmere
pullovers with irregular stripes, remarkably fine shirts in orange reindeer skin and dreamy Restoration silk
shirts in fiery reds and bold yellows.
The justly legendary Hermès straight leather pants this season are straight legged and edged with red leather
piping. In suitings, Nichanian proposed Prince of Wales checks, spiced up with the house’s trademark orange,
and some outstanding three-button suits in brown deerskin.
Has Nichanian been listening to the early Beatles? Her lapel-less, two-ply cashmere herringbone cardigans
recalled the Fab Four circa "Rubber Soul," even though the soundtrack was blasting out samples of the Rolling
Stones. But unlike the lads from Liverpool, one couldn’t possibly imagine any of Hermès’ well-heeled clients
having a Hard Day’s Night.
