Hugo Boss: Captain Kirk's Date Gets Dressed
Written by: Godfrey Deeny

Milan, Mar 5, 2001/FWD/ --- Are you ready for your spaceship, Frau Boss?

Hugo Boss staged its ready-to-wear show in the Fiera Saturday morning, and though this was the label’s second-ever women’s collection its vision owed much of its inspiration more to ‘80s futurism than to current trends.

The show opened with some big, to-the-ankle coats in felt.

They were asymmetrical with slanted pockets and the placement of their buttons seemed almost haphazard.

These were followed by several high-collared jump suits with hip pockets featuring majorly large flaps, worn with calf-high boots -- perfect for Captain Kirk’s date.

All told, fine clothes to attend a soiree organized for the cast of a sci-fi sitcom.

With high-tech computer tinklings on the soundtrack, Boss’s designer Grit Seymour sent out a series of textured leather tank tops and skirts that were oddly accessorized with wide belts and long gloves.

Seymour favors a soft silhouette with rounded shoulders, jodhpur trousers and loose billowing tops.

She’s clearly a designer with her own ideas.

Boss has a billion-dollar-a-year business in men’s fashion and is clearly determined to build its brand in women’s fashion as well.

But Boss’s success in building a massive label of tailored, contemporary clothes at a reasonable price for the aspirational male took a very long time, and judging from this collection its venture into womenswear won’t be an overnight success.
