John Galliano Menswear Spring 2008: Video Game Fantasy
Paris Menswear Show Spring 2008
PARIS, Jun 28, 2007/ FW/ --- Is it just me, or have the geeks really invaded the fashion world? Tonight, John Galliano presented a very provocative show that challenged the status quo with the models looking like that they are characters from a video game.
Opening with a bare-chested model wearing low-waisted army green pants and a gray anorak that can also pass for a trench coat. His white flip flops and multi-colored baseball cap already gave him a rakish quality, but with a scarf covering his face, he could pass for a ‘Sandman’ from the dunes of Ivalice, the imaginary world setting of the Square Enix video game ‘Final Fantasy XII’.
This is not to say that the clothes are not wearable. As always with John Galliano, he takes his audience to a treasure hunt. Underneath the outlandish make up and unconventional headwear, everything is actually wearable, from the striped trench coat to the low crotch carpenter pants.
A V-neck tunic in iridescent green, camouflage carpenter pants, and green anoraks, there was definitely a military theme here. Couple that with camouflage make up, these guys can be Navy Seals, which incidentally is also a theme of a very popular video game.
Is it life imitating art, or is it art imitating life? With John Galliano, whose imagination knows no bounds, both arguments could be true. After all, the designer created ‘Ms. Galliano,’ the mascot of his website, which incidentally, ‘Miss. Galliano’ travels around the world and tells her story at www.johngalliano.com
With fashion in flux, as the world waits for what is going to be the new silhouette for the 21st century, finding inspiration in the high-tech world is natural. And with John Galliano, whose love affair with the Internet started early, this collection can as well be an extension of that relationship.
