Joseph Abboud: Mannequin in the City

New York, Feb 9, 2001 / FashionWindows --- Joseph Abboud's menswear needs no introduction. After
all, the designer won the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year Award back-to-back in 1989 and 1990.
And Joseph Abboud has continually shown his signature soft cuts and used rich fabrics through the
years.
For his Fall 2001 Collection, he chose to have an installation, instead of a runway show. Though some
might disagree with me, I like installation shows personally. The models stand like mannequins and the
audience goes around to "inspect" the clothes. Very similar to store windows.
Of course, in this case, the models did not act like living mannequins at all. They talked, joked and
interacted with the guests. They were part of the party!
In fact, the presentation had a party atmosphere, specially when Kim Catrall of Sex and the City walked him,
straight from a movie set. She was still wearing her costume!
Although most of you know her from the HBO hit show, I've known Kim Catrall from her Startrek role as the
Vulcan Lt. Saavak. For me, her most memorable role was in Mannequin, a movie that had the worst reviews from
the critics but had become a cult movie.
With a site like FashionWindows, you would expect us to know that movie. It is about Visual Merchandising!
It's all about our neck of the woods and Marsha Bentley Hale, whom we fondly call the Patron Saint of
Mannequins was actually a consultant for that movie.
Yes, this was Joseph Abboud's presentation. But we have to show Kim Catrall because she is THE MANNEQUIN!
