Julian Roberts: Nothing Nothing Finale
By: Boyd Davis
Fall 2001 is the final show for Nothing Nothing under Julian Roberts who will be designing
under his own name in the future. Scheduled as the last show for London Fashion Week, it was
also the curtain call for this experimental brand.
For his last collection for Nothing Nothing, Julian Roberts "recycled" concepts and
pieced them together. It was like a jigsaw puzzle, each piece different, the sum more than
the total of each part.
The black and white print mid-calf length dress that opened the show set the tone for the
whole collection. The skirt was in two pieces - solid black and a gauze material that resembled
fabric softener in texture and color. The top was black and white abstract print, that looked
like a canvas of an artwork.
Julian Roberts also reinterpreted prints from Laura Ashley, the show's sponsor and for whom
he is also consulting. The romantic floral Laura Ashley turned into black and white and
almost abstract prints.
Raw and edgy, each garment was more than the sum of each part. Julian Roberts has mastered
his techniques of cutting and he understands shapes, forms and shadows. If handled by inexperienced
hands, the collection would not make sense. Handled by Julian Robert's masterful concepts and
execution, the collection was a statement of converging ideas that became one.
Somehow, it is sad that the label Nothing Nothing bid the fashion scene farewell. But like
what Shakespeare said, "A rose is a rose by any other name." We still have Julian
Roberts and we will still have his experimental creations.
