LONDON, Sep 13, 2002/ FW/ --- Julian Roberts comes back to the London runways
with a friend and partner, Sophie Cheung under the new label, "Julian and
Sophie."
Their debut collection was an experiment in artistic techniques.
Garments were bleached, splatter painted, stenciled-upon, and screen-printed.
The line almost consisteted entirely of dresses with only minimal trousers in the form of
jeans splashed with neon colored paint (which took on an abstract floral quality).
Most edges were frayed and unfinished while silk dresses and tops were assymetrical
and had multiple textures including tucks, gathers, and interesting draping.
Think of it as giant jigsaw puzzle, fashionably constructed and meant to be worn.
Julian And Sophie further emphasized London's avant-garde reputation.
In this collection, the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
Julian Roberts who is already well-known in the London fashion circle for his edgy experimental
designs, collaborating with Sophie Cheung came out with a "softer" collection, giving it
an aura of femininity.
This is not to say that Julian Roberts working alone creates a "hard-edged" collection.
His work at Nothing Nothing and his consulting work with Laura Ashley is proof enough
that Roberts understands what women want when it comes to garments.
Sophie Cheung's hand in the creative process gave the collection an added "umph," hence
the "whole being more than the sum of its parts."
"Julian And Sophie" is a natural progression of the "Julian And" label. And like
before with Julian Roberts, you cannot expect anything less but perfection.
