PARIS, Mar 3, 2006/ FW/ --- With two giant disco balls and Chaka Khan songs playing on the background, Junko Shimada sent a 1980s inspired collection for Fall 2006 straight from the said decade’s club scene.
Opening with an egg-shaped off-the-shoulder knit dress done in red and green checkerboard, Shimada set the tone of the collection, i.e., playing on the shapes that is characteristic of the 1980s.
A-line tent dresses, turtlenecks, Capri-length trousers, box pleat skirts and quilted jackets, it’s all about texture and volume wherein the designer made unconventional mixing like patent leather with knits.
It was like a trip to memory lane when Dallas & Dynasty were still on the air. Big hair, shoulders emphasized, big gold and silver chains as bling bling, the excess of the 1980s were all there.
But this time, Junko Shimada put it under tight control. Creating the aura of the excess, but not going overboard with it.
