PARIS, Mar 7, 2003/ FW/ --- Karl Lagerfeld turned out another winning contemporary-chic collection today for Lagerfeld Gallery.
The show began with dramatic effect, as models seemed to materialize out of a plastic bubble shot with red laser lights.
From masculine pinstripes worn with over-length cuffed blouses, to immaculately cut satin redingotes, you got the impression that the influence behind the collection was none other than Christian Dior's star menswear designer Hedi Slimane. If anything, Mr. Lagerfeld may have just given the world a tantalizing glimpse of what a women's collection by Slimane might look like.
And of course, influenced or not, Karl Lagerfeld is Karl Lagerfeld. One thing you can always count on is that there are no bad collections. No off seasons. Just timeless elegance.
One of the strongest points of the show was also one of its most controversial. A PETA activist disrupted things the very minute one of the exquisite fur coats made an appearance. After running onto the runway to wave a banner at the cameras, practically tripping over a model, the protestor was eventually tackled by security guards.
Seemingly unperturbed, the professional models continued their tread down the catwalk.
It was a high-energy show anchored in gray, black and sliver, but flashing with bright red silk and leather cut to perfection.
There was a fresh, clean look to all of it. From glistening sequined vests to full-length silk gowns for evening, black was the color of choice. Whether wrapped with silver, or sprinkled with sequins the effect never grew tiresome.
Trenches were decorated with feathery fringe, while mink capes were spliced into streamers.
To an outburst of applause, Karl walked the full circle of the runway, attired in a two button black blazer by Hedi Slimane, a high collar white shirt, and a pair of Diesel jeans.
As he acknowledged friends along the route, it was clear that he was enjoying the moment. Then again, these are good times for the legendary designer.
This week at the Bon Marché an exposition launched his compilation called K, the profits going to the Voice of Children and the Princess Grace Foundation. On May 15, Sotheby's Paris office is scheduled to auction a part of his collection of 20th Century Art Deco, estimated to be worth between 3 and 4 million Euros.
His diet book is selling like hotcakes, and his 20th year at Chanel has been marked by success.
It was a great show today, too, for Lagerfeld Gallery, and fascinating look at his ultra contemporary side.
