Paris, Oct 12, 2001/ FWD/ --- Though the shareholders at Chanel and Fendi may not be knocked out to hear it, the best fashion showed in the current season was Lagerfeld’s own signature collection presented Friday in Paris.

In his third catwalk show since relaunching his own label, Karl Lagerfeld really pulled it all together this season with a chic, spare and agreeably expressionist collection.

That’s not to say there was something wrong with Karl’s designs for his day jobs at Fendi or Chanel. But the inspiration flowed strongest at Lagerfeld Gallery this fall.

Due to security concerns, Lagerfeld was forced to change his show’s location from the hip restaurant Georges on the roof of the Pompidou Center to the Carrousel du Louvre.

That was a pity, as the slick new silhouette would have looked especially dramatic set before Georges's vast view of Paris.

From the opening outfits - sheer silk leggings and paneled tops - this was a powerful fashion statement.

Karl played around with lengths like the master he is, though his key look was a high-waisted, to-the-knee skirt worn with a snug, short jacket.

Wrap dresses in black chiffon, held together by broad, multi-strand belts, and a pack of tight, shiny faux snakeskin biker jackets were some of the standouts.

Hair stylist Odile Gilbert also helped the mood wonderfully by giving the models tight black hairstyles with delicate curls.

The designer was also succinct with his latest bag, a leather idea in this season’s hot shape, the half-moon.

But Karl gave his a fresh twist by making the strap out of a chrome ring.

He also showed a potpourri of great accessories including necklaces, armbands, wristbands and belts made of silver characters representing Karl’s name in Japanese.

The collection’s black sling pumps had dramatic dominatrix silver spikes that shouted, “Don’t mess with this girl.”

Romanticism may rule the runways, but it’s always a pleasure to see a master like Lagerfeld striking the perfect note with his own oeuvre.
