Keanan Duffty: Carnaby Cool

Sep 8, 2001/ FW/ --- Keanan Duffty told his fashion audience that it's only rock n roll, but he likes it. With a fan base
that includes David Bowie, there is certainly nothing wrong with that. For Spring 2002, his style icons
included everyone from Mr. Bowie to the Sex Pistols to Adam Ant.
The fact that Duffty is a transplanted English boy who grew up listening to these music makers is apparent
in his work. This season he mixes Carnaby cool with King's Road trash, never forgetting his Brit rock roots.
Taking cues from late 70's/early 80's punk scene, there were lots of ripped and acid washed denim
(yes, acid washed is back, folks). Not a print in sight, but stripes covered his trousers and button-down
shirts. Primary colors, particularly red, white, and blue, were the name of the game, paying homage to both
his native Britain and his home in NY.
Standouts included his dandified frock coats in awning striped cotton, solid-colored, or in denim.
Also great were his trademark photo print shirts, including one saluting the Sex pistols and their
landmark record "Nevermind the Bullocks".
Jackson Pollock also made an appearence in the form of splatter-painted tees. All in all, the collection
screamed anti-establishment downtown hipster, from the long-haired models all the way down to the outta
sight Reebok trainers, which are especially made for him by the shoe company.
Vive le rock!
