Loewe started as a small leather factory in Madrid in 1846. In 1872, Enrique Loewe Roessberg
joins the firm and 20 years later, the firm E. Loewe opens its door to the public.
Specializing in leather goods, the firm will continue to be a family business until
1996 when LVMH takes full control of the company.
After World War II (1945), Loewe introduced the boxcalf handbag designed by Perez de Rozas.
The bag will eventually become the classic look for Loewe.
It will be another 25 years before the firm expands its product line. During the 1970s,
Loewe will design its first scarf and eventually expanding it to a full womenswear line.
The perfume line was also introduced, beginning with "L de Loewe" in 1972. The menswear
and men's accessories lines were introduced during the 1980s.
In 1997, Narciso Rodriguez became the Creative Director for the womenswear line, and Loewe
debuted in Paris the following year. The designer would stay with Loewe for four years,
resigning in 2001 to launch his own fashion house.
José Enrique Oña Selfa became the Creative Director for the womenswear line in September
2001, and would debut in Paris Fashion Week during the Fall 2002 season.
The son of Spanish émigré parents, Ona Selfa was born in Brussels and attended
that city's prestigious Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de la Cambre.
After graduation, he worked with Oliver Theyskens, and launched his own label "JE Oña Selfa"
in Feb 2000 where he took charge of the artistic direction as well as designing.
His collections are distributed in leading stores such as Maria Luisa in Paris,
Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus, among others.
On the announcement of his appointment as Creative Director for Loewe, Oña Selfa sadi,
“I feel very honoured to join the Loewe team.
It is an opportunity which will allow me to pay tribute to a luxury house with a
long and an important history and tradition.
I hope to be able to fulfil my responsibilities and be worthy of the extraordinary level
which Loewe represents in my eyes: a brand embodying the epitome of quality, luxury and
perfection”.
