Paris, Jul 2, 2001/ FWD/ --- Marc Jacobs' mania with thrift shop style and dressing down in expensive
fabrics received its latest outing in Paris Monday in a Louis Vuitton men's collection that was,
unfortunately, neither very chic nor particularly inventive.
Without doubt, there was no shortage of fine items on the runway - a series of multi-zip, calf motorcycle
jackets would look great on lots of figures, as would some great hand-washed cotton voile shirts in the show's
finale.
However, what was most distinctive about this collection was the lack of creativity, and, dare one say,
effort.
Revamping earlier fashion trends is all very well, but when so many of the looks in a collection
bring to mind the word déjà vu, you know something isn't working.
Frankly, pairing cashmere sweatpants with sleeveless leather jackets or wearing denim jackets over a suit
isn't chic, it's sloppy.
Moreover, Marc usually uses his wit and sense of humor to whip up some great Vuitton accessories. But
this season these were few and far between, as every model wore the same round-toed brushed leather boot.
One couldn't fault the casting - handsome, hale and hearty hirsute fellows - or the grand music
(Guns 'N' Roses throughout).
But in terms of new ideas or progression in style, this collection barely
advanced fashion one iota.
