Martin Margiela PARIS, Oct 8, 2004/ FW/ --- As the PR’s in sterilized white lab coats escorted me to my dark studio seat, I knew that I was in for a Friday night treat.

Martin Margiela show is all about atmosphere and the underworld of fashion weirdom. The pre-show soundtrack was great, but the show started with just the tearing of the cardboard runway by stiletto heel wearing models.

The private new age tearoom show began with a blue early 80s business dress, but of course the model was not wearing it. The models were wearing tops where the actual dresses were sewn around their waist often still on the hanger.

The look was totally distressed as if the models did not have professional dressers backstage.

Black trench coats were tossed over models’ shoulders. White and beige skirts were double faced with high waist lines. Large floral applicades were attached to sleeveless male suit coats. Highlights of the show included sleeveless band jackets with whale net bustier covers.

As the busy motorway music played loudly, glitter pumps in gold and silver punched more holes through the runway. Slips were worn as outerwear and men’s shirts were strapped around bodies worn as dresses with sweater layering. Gowns were horizontally sewn around the models and draping the floor.

Again Margiela presented a unique show that was genuinely creative in every aspect.
