Martin Margiela Menswear Spring 2007: ‘I Left My Heart In San Francisco’
Paris Menswear Show Spring 2007

Martin Margiela PARIS, Jul 1, 2006/ FW/ --- Nowadays, the Bay Area is better known for Silicon Valley, but there was a time when a romantic view of San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge were the first things that come to mind when Northern California is mentioned. For Spring 2007, Martin Margiela was inspired by the city that inspired the song ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ and not the movie, ‘Pirates of Silicon Valley.’

In a presentation that started with a short movie depicting models going around the city, it was obvious from the start that the collection was about urban life. And though the inspiration was not apparent in the movie, a closer examination of the clothes revealed Martin Margiela’s romantic albeit graphical vision of San Francisco.

From the silk-screened tee in different shades of blue and gray graduating to purple then magenta, it was the view of the sunset San Francisco Bay during a foggy day.

Then, there are the multiple variants of the biker jacket in blue and iridescent beige, reminiscent of the times when ‘Streets of San Francisco’ was a TV hit and Clint Eastwood’s Inspector Callahan’s famous quote ‘Make my day,’ is on everyone’s vocabulary.

There were also allusions to the coffee shop denizens and the hippie culture that permeated the city for a long time with the tees saying ‘My grass is blue.’

Cardigans in color blocks and relaxed fit suit jackets allude to the privilege life at Nob Hill, and of course, Martin Margiela could not help himself but also include the geeky denizens of Silicon Valley dressing them in straight cut trousers, crew neck tees and one-button suit jackets then shod them in lace-up sneakers.
