Moschino's Mock Models

MILAN, Mar 8, 2002/ FWD/ --- Moschino models took their sweet time strutting down the
catwalk, stopping to gaze provocatively out into the crowd, fan themselves from the
unbearable heat or whisper secrets to each other while leaning against the rail that
divided the runway in half.
Maybe they forgot to heed the "Look ahead, be positive and don't stop" instructions pinned
up in some of Milan's backstage areas. Or perhaps they were staging a little rebellion.
In a fun and irreverent presentation of its fall-winter 2002 collection in Milan Monday,
Moschino gave voice to the woes of models.
The show began with the models wearing a series of outfits in black -- from chiffon dresses
with glittering decorations and pants with spacious pockets to a black ribbed turtleneck
accessorized with a Moschino logo belt and an oversized black coat -- accompanied by a
soundtrack of a model complaining in Italian, "I'm so tired. I can't take it anymore, another
show. If they brush my hair anymore, I'll be bald. As usual, the designer will not get my
phone number."
Throughout the show, Moschino had fun with the canon of precise tailoring.
Their far-from-rigid design ideas were clear from the moment the invite arrived:
a measuring tape with varying lengths for each centimeter and superstitiously without
the numbers 13 and 17 (In Italy it's Friday the 17th that's unlucky).
The result: a bit of inside-out tailoring; a gray skirt with the button moved down from
the waist to the top of the thigh to reveal a green panel beneath; a black dress divided
into prim and party halves; and sweaters covered with collages of tailors' tools or bows
and ribbons.
The show wrapped up with sultry and silky dresses.
In between, there was everything from smart beige coats, cardigans, crocheted sweaters and
vests to corduroy and khaki pants and traditional and not-so traditional suits -- with
the common thread being the wackiness.
But as usual, there were also lots of practical clothes.
