MILAN, Sep 30, 2003/ FW/ --- From the heart shaped invitations to the finale with Maria Carla dressed as Popeye’s love Olive Oil (also a past symbol of Moschino), Moschino Cheap & Chic presented literally a fairy tale collection for spring summer 2004.
Sequined bikini fairy god mothers in brightly coloured light transparent kaftans came waving wands. Romantic love heart prints, stiletto doll shoes, crochet, applicae and pretty florals are all key details in their enchanted forrest.
A technicoloured dream with mini 1970’s jumpsuits, despite the banal use of Pucci inspired
fabric as seen on the catwalks of London and New York.
Wide horizontal stripes on skirts and pants that alternated between the knee and the floor.
Forrest dancing fairies in ruffles, puffs and gathers to a music score of all our favourite
childrens stories.
Bomber jackets were reworked with mid length puff sleeves and buttons used instead of zips.
Dresses were often as free and light as the semi transparent printed fabric they were made
from, giving the innocent little girl a cheeky sexy edge.
Like all tales, there must be an evil stepmother or wicked witch and the Cheap & Chic version
of villainess ala ‘Grevilia De Ville’ of 101 Dalmations came in a deep plunging V 1920’s
sparkling fringe dress, naturally in monochrome black.
In an extract from a Tailors workshop, dolls wore visible stitching on jackets, half finished vests and pin cushions as accessories in a graphic display of controlled chaos.
This postmodern pop fairy tale showed detail and variety, after all, like all good stories a happy ending is inevitable.
