MILAN, Sep 27, 2006/ FW/ --- From Jackie O to Woodstock, from Marilyn Monroe to Grace Kelly, the Moschino Spring 2007 collection gives homage to the 1960s and the icons that now inhabit our pop culture.
A seeming playful catwalk presentation, as the wont of Moschino – beehive hair dos, Jackie O’s pantsuit sets, conquistador-inspired swimsuits, a headband wrapped around your forehead made popular by Woodstock and the hippie generation – all these and more had been reworked to become part of a contemporary wardrobe.
And yes, it is fashion. The opening outfit – a white long-sleeve tent dress adorned with silvery chrome on its baby collar, sleeve cuffs and hemline already makes the statement about the revolutionary 1960s on how it has changed the world.
With Santana’s ‘Evil Ways’ playing on the background, Woodstock comes to mind, as the Mexican singer debuted on that legendary concert. Still, the choice of music because of the lyrics, ‘You’ve got to change your evil ways, baby’ and the fun aspect of the clothes presented in the collection, it was also a pun to itself, showing Moschino’s sense of humor has not changed after all these years.
The atmosphere might be lighthearted, the whole show planned to give a smile to the audience’s faces, but there is a purpose to it all, more serious and philosophical than meet the eyes.
It’s a story about pop culture and how it has affected fashion. We see Grace Kelly, Jackie O, Marilyn Monroe and in some cases, Lucille Ball as Lucy Ricardo. All lovable images to us, even to those who had not been born during the heydays of their popularity.
Then, there’s the reference to Woodstock, the festival that changed the world in more ways than one. The 1960s was revolutionary and Moschino’s choice to put it on the runway when fashion is on a cusp, as it leaves the 20th century behind and focuses more on the 21st, it was also a fond farewell, or perhaps, till we meet again.
It’s the middle of the week; the Milan ready-to-wear season is at its peak. The Moschino show is reminder of the fun aspect of fashion while still being philosophical.
