New York, Feb 13, 2001/ FWD©/ --- The spirit of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wafted through
Chelsea Tuesday night in the collection of Narciso Rodriguez, the man who designed the tragic
heroine's wedding gown.
Cool, understated and classy, this collection managed to pick up on many of the key trends
dominating the season without aping any of them.
Rodriguez opened with a phalanx of black outfits - military trenches in poplin and wool,
woolen peacoats and strictly-cut dresses.
Much of his skill lies in the detailing. His high
super-hero collars with insert bands and over-long armholes were freshly chic.
The collection was deceptively simple and unfortunately a mite impractical.
Rodriguez sent
out some black leather down jackets, with sleeves cut off above the elbow.
Why, one wondered,
design a winter garment that will make the wearer freeze?
For evening, Rodriguez cleverly exploited his synergy with crystal specialist Swarovski.
A stretch wool Venetian dress with crystal shoulder straps and a smart metal and a chain
dress with fringes on the side, center and back were two standouts, visually and audibly.
The noise of the latter could be heard above the discordant rock of the show's soundtrack.
