PARIS, Feb 24, 2003/ FW/ --- Ozwald Boateng has again created a collection infused
with modernity, exotic influences and unique detail, whilst staying true to his roots
as a Savile Row tailor and menswear designer.
For a number of seasons, Ozwald Boateng has been on a global journey, drawing inspiration
from diverse cultures and locations.
His last collection “An Indian Odyssey” was a foray into the history and culture of
the Indian sub-continent; prior to that he explored the roots of African Culture with
his collection “Tribal Traditionalism”.
For Fall 2003, his influences are derived from the inter-linked, yet fundamentally different
cultures of China and Japan.
The spirituality, disciplines and traditions of ancient China may seem to be diametrically
opposed to the vibrancy, innovation and futuristic technology of modern-day Japan.
Yet the two form the beginning and end of a circle: the fundamentally ancient sitting along
side an imagined, futuristic modernity.
This dual dynamic of old and new can also be seen in the Wachowski Brothers’ cult film,
The Matrix, from which Boateng also drew ideas. He was inspired by the notion of a
futuristic, computer generated reality in which the ancient practices of martial arts are used.
Key pieces in the collection include items based on the Shinobi Shozoko, the traditional
uniform of the Ninja. Wrap over tunic tops, with deep V-necks and high vents at the sides,
are seen in traditional tweeds and corduroys.
Tailored jackets are paired with ninja trousers, slim legged and bound with straps around
the calves.
Fitted floor length cashmere coats with nehru collars and deep single vents, recall the
garb of Oriental monks, lending an air of mystery whilst allowing ease and grace of movement.
Knitwear in the finest Merino wool is embellished with fabric appliquÈ and embroidery,
depicting the painterly brush-stokes of Oriental symbols.
As well as more traditional shapes, shirts are also fitted, featuring nehru collars and
decorative front panels.
Ties are adorned with edited elements of the flags of both nations: the stars of China
and the rising sun of Japan. Other ties feature Boateng’s interpretation of the “green rain”
in The Matrix – the dripping computer code that cascades down screens in the film.
As always, Ozwald Boateng’s trademark suits feature strongly in the pret-a-porter collection.
Semi-bespoke and designed using traditional Savile Row techniques and etiquettes, the suits
have been created in an array of fabrics and colours, featuring Boateng’s unique details
and finishes.
This new collection features over 250 pieces, including suits, shirts and ties, evening wear,
casual pieces such as tailored jeans and knitwear and an extensive range of accessories.
“My interest in the marriage of old and new has characterised my work for some time,” says
Boateng. “I find that the Far East embodies the extremes of ancient tradition and a
futuristic, forward looking modernity that is always years ahead of the West.
This gives Far Eastern culture a resounding depth, a sense of history that pre-dates
civilisation as we know it, and a modernity that stretches beyond our imagination.
It is from the two poles of this culture that I have drawn inspiration this season.”
