MILAN, Feb 27, 2004/ FW/ --- Is Miuccia Prada a closet sci-fi fan? Last January, during the menswear season, her main theme was robots. For the womenswear season, she literally brought everyone out of this world, as in outer space.
With a landscape of a beautiful planet known only to Star Trek fans serving as a backdrop, Miuccia Prada sent out a groundbreaking collection last Tuesday guaranteed to fly off the shelves at warp speed come fall.
The coats will probably be on warp 9.5 (top speed in Star Trek) when they fly. With their perfectly molded shoulders worthy of Starfleet dress uniform but more stylish of course, and their translucent elbow patches, it is something that had never been seen before.
But don’t think even for a moment that Miuccia Prada had turned sci-fi, because these clothes are not what Seven of Nine or even Queen Amidalah would wear during their “time.”
The futuristic aspect is more evocative because of the groundbreaking quality of the designs. The Capri-length pants, flowing empire dresses and bloomer skirts are definitely for the 21st century gal.
And just to show that her feet are still planted firmly on the grounds of planet Earth, Miuccia Prada used Chinese fabrics in several of the looks.
To continue evoking the future, the designer used the little robots from the menswear looks as belt charms.
This is definitely one of the best collections in Milan this season. I already know someone who will make a beeline to the Prada store in Dallas’ Highland Park Village.
My editor who is a big Trekkie is just thrilled to death to see her other passion finally mixed with her main love, which is fashion.
