Miu Miu Subverts Fashion's Vocabulary

Milan, Oct 2, 2001/ FWD/ --- Though its spirit was very much in keeping with recent seasons, Miu Miu's
spring 2002 collection shown Monday in Milan produced some novel new twists to fashion's vocabulary.
Miuccia Prada is not the first designer to use underwear as outerwear. But while her peers dress models
in steamy bras and negligee, Miuccia uses Victorian petticoats and pinafores. The result is a much more
alluring effect precisely because the look is so innocent.
Miuccia also offered up a few Florence Nightingale blouses but subverted them by pairing them with hot pants.
Next summer's Miu Miu gal remains a studious figure - the soundtrack sounded like a talented student
taking a piano lesson. But she's a tad more romantic than in recent years. She enjoys her afternoons off
in attractively flared peasant dresses with traditional motifs, many of which were printed on the clunky
mules in which the models hit the catwalk in Prada's headquarters.
And where other designers have edited out any military references from these shows, Miuccia sent out several
khaki army jackets and combat belts over the traditional skirts.
Several headmistresses also made appearances on the runway, attired in elongated, pleated shrouds like Miss
Jean Brodie making a midnight check on the girls' dormitory. Skirt lengths went from the ground, to the ankle,
to the knee, to a modest mini in this collection, before a few kid sisters appeared for a hot evening date,
looking pretty in micro minis and blouses cut to look like a bra.
All told, a great school to send your daughters to.
