Brides Who Rock

New York April 30, 2001/FWD/ --- Richard Tyler evidently found style inspiration in everything from tea
roses to Axl Rose for his Spring 2002 Bridal Collection. The show - set in the garden of the designer's
downtown brownstone around a pool full of gardenias - presented several princess bride type gowns, but
many of the most memorable styles had cutting-edge details like vented sleeves and off the shoulder necklines.
In addition to the sweet, delicate colors and fabrics that Tyler has made an integral part of his bridal
collection, the designer also paid homage to the non-traditional bride. Putting a new spin on his infamous
bridal bikini, Tyler showed the nuptial two-piece in pink with a white organza cover up. And for the woman
whose idea of paradise is Aspen rather than Antigua, Tyler created an ivory cashmere embroidered sweater
with a matching painted silk taffeta skirt.
For the bride who wants to look sexy, not sweet, Tyler had a drop-dead gorgeous pink silk charmeuse, lace
embroidered slip dress. For a more softly sultry style he showed a draped rosette gown with tiny white rose
accents - ideal for a garden wedding.
Tyler let his imagination run wild for these designs, and the results were amazing. Rarely does one see
everything from a traditional ivory Italian duchess beaded gown (think Stephanie Seymour's second wedding
to Peter Brant) to motorcycle zippered jackets with a beaded biker cap (think Seymour's first wedding to
Axl Rose).
"That one took me back to my priest days," Tyler said, pointing to the medallion lace strapless gown shown
with a white silk coat emblazoned with a giant beaded cross, reminiscent of Madonna in her "Like A Virgin"
days. "Maybe he meant his Judas Priest days," one assistant laughed.
So we asked Tyler, did he design the rock-chick looks with any special bride in mind? After all, we hear
that he has several celebrity weddings coming up, including two big ones in June.
"No, I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular," Tyler said, slyly declining to name names. "After all,
anyone can be a rock star."
