Wind in Ferragamo's Sails: The Company Celebrates in Miami

Bal Harbour, Apr 12, 2002/ FWD/ --- An eclectic group of sailors, editors and fashionable
Ferragamo fans gathered at the Ferragamo store in Bal Harbour on Tuesday evening at a party
to celebrate Ferragamo and the Volvo Ocean Race -- the longest and most demanding sailing
race in the world.
Sailing enthusiast Leonardo Ferragamo, as well as being CEO of Palazzo Feroni Finanzianria
S.p.A. (the strategic development sector of Ferragamo), is President of Nautor, the company
that produces Swan boats, a prestigious sailing boat.
Nautor is a main sponsor of the race; and Leonardo, and his wife Beatrice Garagnani,
threw the cocktail party to celebrate the Volvo Ocean Race arrival in Miami.
FWD took a few moments with Leonardo while the bash got going to find out more about
his sailing passion and Salvatore Ferragamo, whose shoes are still cut and finished by hand.
FWD: Tell us about Nautor.
L: I have been involved in racing since the '80s -- it is something I really enjoy and
wanted to play a bigger part in, so I am now President of the Nautor company. At Ferragamo,
and we also have a new line called Nautor, which is a sports/sailing line. We have used
technologies found in the production of the boats and translated those into the line.
FWD: It seems you run the investments outside of the Salvatore Ferragamo label. Can you tell
us about your hotel division?
L: I started our hotel division, Lungarno Hotels, in 1996. With a hotel it has to be great.
The customer does not come away with anything tangible, as when you go shopping. All they
have is the memory of the experience, so that memory must be wonderful for the hotel to work.
I now have five hotels in Florence.
FWD: Do the hotels have a Ferragamo stamp on them?
L: The hotels are all very different and true to their location and architecture. They are
luxurious and beautiful -- but that is the only similarity. They are all very individual
properties and the interiors include many different designers.
FWD: Are you happy with the acquisition of Emanuel Ungaro?
L: Ungaro is a wonderful label. I adore the designs and they serve as a balance to the
Ferragamo label. The possibilities and potentialities of the company are something we are
working on at the moment. It has so much more.
FWD: What is the secret of Ferragamo's success?
L: We all work very well together and very family-oriented -- that is what keeps us going.
My father and mother passed their determination and motivation on to all of us. And obviously
we all have particular skills and talents, which we each use within the Ferragamo company.
