Sheila Maloney: Appliques Applications
By: Boyd Davis
The applique banners said it all for Sheila Maloney's show entitled "Surface." The
collection was dominated with appliques, embroidery and figurative stitching, most of
them left unfinished, giving it a raw edge.
Giving in to the transparent trend, the designer sent models to the catwalk wearing
flimsy blouses. Giving in to the polite society, the "appropriate" parts were
properly covered with sashes at times.
Dresses and skirt hemlines were just above the knee. Skirts and pants were paired with
V-neck blouses (usually deep or plunging). Pants came in two forms - slouchy and cigarette.
Sweaters and jackets has the obligatory turtlenecks. My favorite was the green down jacket
which was ski-wear inspired. If you close the buttons, its enough to keep you warm in the
Alps.
The whole collection was elegant and modern with a touch of nostalgia. The unfinished
embroidery and stitching made it very interesting.
